Katrín Jakobsdóttir, prime minister of Iceland, condemns racist comments made by US president Donald Trump, echoing the sentiments of the House of Representatives majority resolution passed on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Ms Jakobsdóttir told Stundin via a spokesperson that she supports the resolution, calling Mr Trump's comments about four Democratic congresswomen of color "unacceptable".
The Democratic majority in the House of Representatives was joined by four members of Mr Trump's own party in stating that his "racist comments have legitimized fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color". In a series of Tweets on Sunday, Mr Trump had accused four Democratic congresswomen of color of attacking him and the country.
The president wrote: "Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came." All four women, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley and Ilhan Omar, have refused to apologize and call the president racist. They are all US citizens, three of them born in the US and one who came as a child refugee.
"It’s important to note that the President’s words yesterday, telling four American Congresswomen of color “go back to your own country,” is hallmark language of white supremacists," Ms Ocasio-Cortez wrote Monday on Twitter. "Trump feels comfortable leading the GOP into outright racism, and that should concern all Americans."
Ms Jakobsdóttir joins fellow heads of government UK prime minister Theresa May and Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau in condemning the remarks.
