Áþessum degi fyrir 2.355 árum var háð austur í uppsveitum Mesópótamíu eða Íraks ein af örlagaríkustu orrustum fornaldar, slagur sem sannarlega breytti gangi sögunnar. Í rúmar tvær aldir hafði Persaveldi verið máttugasta stórveldi heimsins og ekkert útlit fyrir annað en svo yrði áfram um langa hríð. Persum hafði að vísu mistekist að leggja undir sig Grikkland en það var lítið annað en svolítið bakslag í sigurgöngu Persa.
Raunar var allt útlit fyrir það á þriðju öld FT (fyrir upphaf tímatals okkar) að Persar myndu þrátt fyrir allt ná yfirráðum yfir Grikklandi, þótt ekki yrði það í krafti hernaðarsigra. Með því að ýta undir sundrung og klofning í röðum Grikkja með mútugreiðslum og fagurgala féll hvert gríska borgríkið af öðru undir áhrifavald þeirra.
Innblásnir af fyrri sigrum Grikkja fóru nágrannar þeirra í Makedóníu hins vegar að gera sér furðulegar hugmyndir. Filippus nokkur varð konungur í Makedóníu og lét sér detta í hug að fara með her gegn Persum og hreinlega leggja ríki þeirra undir sig. Og hann hófst handa um að þjálfa upp her til þess arna.
Filippus varð helstil skammlífur en ungur sonur hans, Alexander, tók þá hugmyndir hans að erfðum, ásamt krúnunni, og reyndist enn metnaðarfyllri og flinkari herforingi en Filippus. Sumarið 332 var hann mættur með her á yfirráðasvæði Persa og sigraði Daríus 3. Persakóng í mikilli orrustu þar sem nú mætast Tyrkland og Sýrland.
Hann lét þó ekki kné fylgja kviði í það sinn heldur hélt suður á bóginn til að leggja undir sig Egiftaland (sjá flækjusögu í Heimildinni næsta föstudag) en Daríusi gafst á meðan tími til að safna í nýjan her.
Hann var þó ekki öruggari með sig en svo að hann gerði Alexander að minnsta kosti þrisvar tilboð um samninga og vopnahlé og fól það síðasta í sér að Alexander fengi kóngsdótturina og hálft ríkið, en hinn ungi Makedóníumaður hafnaði hverju boði.
Sumarið 331 var Alexander svo mættur með her sinn til Mesópótamíu. Eftir því sem næst verður komist taldi herinn um 47.000 manns. Af því liði var 7.000 manna riddaralið. Stærstur hluti þess voru hinir þrautþjálfuðu „félagar“ sem Alexander sjálfur stýrði.
Daríus fór lengi vel undan í flæmingi og hefur sennilega vonast til þess að ógurlegir sumarhitarnir myndu draga þrótt úr Makedóníumönnum eða Alexander myndi glepjast til að setjast um Babýlon og eyða í það orku og mannslífum. Alexander var hins vegar enginn asni og sneiddi hjá öllum pyttum þá um sumarið. Þegar fór að hausta var her hans kominn norður til Gaugamela sem svo heitir á mótum sléttunnar í Mesópótamíu og fjallanna þar í norðri.
Og þar náði hann loks í skottið á Daríusi og her hans.
Daríus hafði með ítrekuðum beiðnum sínum um vopnahlé og samninga sýnt að hann var dauðsmeykur við Alexander og hina harðlyndu makedónsku hermenn. Nú hafði hann hins vegar áttað sig á að hjá úrslitaorrustu yrði ekki komist og í nokkra daga biðu herirnir átekta við Gaugamela.
Hermenn Aexanders hvíldu sig og hesta sína eftir erfiða göngu þangað norður eftir en menn Daríusar reyndu að undirbúa hinn væntanlega vígvöll sem fyrst. Það fólst ekki síst í að rífa upp kjarr til þess að stríðsfílarnir, sem Daríus hafði í þjónustu sinni, kæmust leiðar sinnar til árása gegn her Alexanders.
Öllum fornum heimildum ber saman um að Daríus hafi verið mörgum sinnum liðfleiri en Alexander. Sumir höfundar fullyrða að Persakóngur hafi haft milljón manna her við Gaugamela. Öruggt má telja að það sé fjarri öllum sanni.
Þeir nútímahöfundar sem reynt hafa að áætla fjöldann í her Daríusar nefna tölur allt frá 50.000 til 270.000. Varlega áætlað má því giska á að Persar hafi verið tvisvar sinnum fjölmennari en Makedóníumenn, þó hugsanlega hafi munað meiru.
Og þar að auki höfðu Persar yfir að ráða 200 stríðsvögnum, skriðdrekum þeirra tíma, og um 15 fílum.
Alexander hikaði þó hvergi heldur gekk djarfur og kokhraustur til leiks. Enginn hershöfðingi, hvorki í fornöld né síðar, hefur nokkru sinni tekið meiri eða beinni þátt í sjálfum bardögunum sem hann atti hermönnum sínum út í og þeir voru því tilbúnir til að fylgja honum nánast á heimsenda.
Ekki var þörf fyrir það í þessu tilfelli en vissulega varð orrustan hörð og blóði drifin. Þótt Persar væru töluvert fleiri voru makedónsku dátarnir mun reyndari og einbeittari og þegar í harðbakkann sló fóru þeir að láta undan síga.
Alexander stýrði sjálfur hægri væng sínum og beitti þar riddaraliðinu af mikilli hugkvæmni uns flótti brast á lið Persa. Á tímabili var útlit fyrir að Alexander kynni jafnvel að ná alla leið að Daríusi en Persakóngur lagði þá á hraðan flótta frá vígstöðvunum.
Alexander hefði getað elt hann uppi og sennilega náð honum en þá bárust boð um að vinstri vængurinn af her Makedóníu væri í hættu staddur. Hann sneri því frá eftirreiðinni á eftir Daríusi og hjálpaði liðsmönnum sínum í staðinn að brjóta her Persakóngs endanlega á bak aftur.
Þessi varkárni Alexanders kom honum þó ekki í koll. Daríus ætlaði sér vissulega að halda til austurhluta ríkisins og safna þar í nýjan her og stefna gegn Alexander en hann hafði nú misst tiltrú manna sinna. Frændi Daríusar lét myrða hann og skildi líkið eftir við þjóðveg þar sem Alexander fann það fljótlega.
Af einhverjum ástæðum minnast fornar heimildir hvergi á hvernig stríðsfílum Daríusar farnaðist í orrustunni svo kannski varð ekki af því að þeim væri sleppt lausum. En hvernig sem því vék við var sigur Alexanders við Gaugamela alger og afgerandi og Persaveldi fallið.
Og nú hófst útbreiðsla grískrar — eða hellenskrar — menningar fyrir alvöru um öll Miðausturlönd og átti eftir að hafa gríðarleg og ómetanleg áhrif á framtíðarsögu mannkynsins. Ef Alexander hefði tapað og kannski fallið 1. október árið 331 FT kann vel að vera að klassísk menning, sem við köllum svo, hefði verið til frambúðar innilokuð í einu horni Balkanskagans.
Og grunnur vestrænnar menningar væri persneskur, ekki grísk-rómverskur.
