Women form the majority of the cabinet, with six ministerial positions out of eleven. And of the six parties represented in Alþingi, Iceland’s Parliament, four of them are led by women, including the three government coalition parties. For the first time ever, the chairman of the Independence Party is a woman. Only two male chairmen of political parties represented in Alþingi remain.
At the city level, the same picture emerges. There, women are the leaders of all five parties that form the majority. And in fact, of all parties represented in Reykjavík city council except the Progressive Party.
In this light, it is not surprising that the mayor, the chair of the city executive council and the president of the city council are women.
