Clayton er bandarískur og  varði doktorsritgerð sína við Stony Brook háskólann í New York árið 2017. Clayton var lektor við félagsfræðideild Memphis háskóla frá árinu 2018 til 2023 og frá haustinu 2023 hefur hann svo gegnt stöðu dósents í félagsfræði við félagsvísindadeild Háskólans á Akureyri. Sérsvið Clayton eru söguleg félagsfræði og félagsfræðilegar kenningar. Hann hefur sér í lagi rannsakað samfélagslegar breytingar sem og trúarlegar víddir stjórnmála og pólitískar víddir trúarbragða. Doktorsritgerð Clayton hverfðist sem dæmi um sögulega greiningu á píslarvættisdauða í Vestur-Evrópu en efni hennar kom út sem bók árið 2020 með titlinum The Ultimate Sacrifice: Martyrdom, Sovereignty, and Secularization in the West hjá Routledge háskólaútgáfunni. The religious dimensions of politics and the political dimensions of religion 

Americans and Icelanders are sometimes contrasted as opposites in terms of religiosity and the relationship between religion and politics. However, the connection between politics and religion is more complex than that. 

To learn more about the religious dimensions of politics and the political dimensions of religion, we sat down with Clayton Fordahl, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Akureyri, to discuss his academic journey and main research areas. Clayton hails from the United States and defended his dissertation at Stony Brook University in 2017. He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Memphis from 2018 to 2023 and has been at the University of Akureyri since the fall of 2023. Clayton’s primary research areas are historical sociology and social theory. He has focused mainly on social change and the religious dimensions of politics and the political dimensions of religion. His dissertation, for instance, centered on a historical analysis of martyrdom in Western Europe. Moreover, Clayton published a book on the topic titled The Ultimate Sacrifice: Martyrdom, Sovereignty, and Secularization in the West with Routledge in 2020. Guðmundur Oddsson, Professor of Sociology at the University of Akureyri, sat down with Clayton to discuss classical and historical sociology, martyrdom past and present, declining religiosity in the West, the Italian polymath Vilfredo Pareto, and the U.S. presidential elections.
